If rent realitor snoops in your house?

By anonymous

I was renting a house from a reality agent who was trying to sell the house. (He was the actual owner of the house). I had always been a good renter. Kept the place clean. Kept my yard up. No loud party’s till 3 am in the morning. No drugs; etc. I had only one occurrence where my rent was late in which I made 2 separate payments to clear that matter up. I had a dog that never made any messes on the carpet. (very well potty trained). Anyway I am a very private person. I don’t go out much. If not at work I usually am at home unless I have to leave to pay bills or buy groceries or if I decide to go visit a friend or family member. I am a single gay man. And I had very private things in my home that were put up in boxes or drawers. (Very private). And yes the private items I had were legal. I was not doing or hiding anything illegal in my home. Anyway the reality agent called me about 3-hours before I had to be at work & asked if it would be okay if he could show the house to some people that were interested in buying the house while I’d be at work & he said that he would be there so no one would be snooping in my private things. I agreed to let him show the house to the people interested while I would be at work. A few days later I had noticed when I came home from work that my television channel would be on channels that I don’t watch. For example: I’m not into sports so why would my t.v. channel be on the ESPN channel when I would turn it on after coming home from work? I started thinking something is weird here. Something isn’t right. I started noticing certain drawers that had been open that I hadn’t open for weeks, months if even that. It made me think to check to see if my private things had been gone through. And sure enough I could tell that someone had been obviously snooping because I had items opened & left out of the actual box container it was originally in. My books were moved around. I always had the books in alphabetical order including my movies. I’m a little anal about that kind of stuff. I had boxes that had been cut open. It was very obvious that someone had been in my place while I was at work not just once but a few times referring to the television incident. So I called the police & they weren’t any help. I called the reality agent that I was renting from & asked him about it. He denied that anything like that went on while he was showing the house while I was at work. But didn’t seem to be too concern about making efforts to try to find out what happened. He didn’t even ask if I had called the police. Anyway a week later the people apparently bought the house. And they came to fix a few things. And the reality agent that I was originally renting from showed up as well. And he was acting very evasive when I tried to talk to him about my possible home invasion. He asked me how I think they got in? And I told him that I don’t know because there doesn’t seem to be anything that shows windows or my back or front door tampered with. He tried to tell me how thieves can get in your home. Nothing was stolen as far as I know. But my suspicion was him or the people who bought the place who would of been taking over as my new landlords because they were only buying the house to rent out. I felt very violated. Nothing made any sense. What can I do about this? Can I sue? Would I have a case here? I ended up moving out due to feeling fear for my life. I didn’t know if I was being stalked or put on some kind of witch hunt. I really don’t get why someone would do that to someone. My private things were put away. Someone made an effort to actually go through my stuff. And the fact that my t.v. was being watched tells me that they knew that I was not going to be home for awhile. Anyway it has been over a year & a half and I am still traumatized over this. I have went to therapy, talked to friends & family about it. I haven’t really done anything about this because I really don’t know what to do about it. I can’t just let it go & move on. And everyone keeps telling me that I really need to. Please help? I really don’t know what to do. I need some really good advice here. Thank you…….
