Is who pays what my landlord’s business
By Holly
My roommate and I have been sharing a house for the last 3 years and have never been late with our rent or utilities. Since November my roomate (as per our own personal agreement) has been paying for everything while I am desperately seeking a job. We have not missed one payment and last month when our landlord picked up the rent, he informed us that if we weren’t able to split the rent fairly between us he would start thinking of eviction. Can he do this?

No. As long as the rent is paid and the lease agreement is not violated then he cannot legally evict you. Maybe your roommate complained to your landlord about it and asked for your landlord to do something. I mean think about it, you’re freeloading and when do you expect this agreement to continue? It’s been three months that your roommate has been paying the full rent. Anyway, it’s your agreement so if your landlord continues to harass you, you can file a complaint with the RPA. |
