landlord making false claims of dammage after lease over

By Kmends

My son in college in Buffalo NY rented a house with 3 other friends. Before they moved in the landlord toured the house with them and told them everything was OK. After the one year lease was over they decided to move out. The landlord came and went through the house with them and said everything was OK just like he did before they moved in. He took the keys from them and they left. 2 months later he sent them damage bill totalling $6500.00 and gave them the ultimatum to pay $3500.00 if paid in full in 30 days. They challenged him and he said the damages were found lated. He is suing each student in small claims court for $5000.00 each.
What are their legal rights.

Thanks.
