Landlord using my personal internet

By Cody Eivers

Hi, so my roommate’s grandmother (the landlord) owns a set of apartments. I moved in a few months ago and had MY internet moved to this location. So one day, *without telling or asking me*, her grandmother has a guy set up security cameras that run off internet so she can keep up with anything outside, which I understand, but she just hooks up to MY internet without saying anything to me. So now just recently I found out that she gave out my wireless router password to another tenant. I just found out because he actually came upstairs to ask for it again because he said he forgot it. Now I’m assuming she got my password whenever they were here moving it because the internet company needed it, blah blah blah and she was here.

I found the other tenant on my router and kicked them off then changed the password again. Now she does NOT pay ANYTHING on my internet. I pay 100% of the bill.

Some of my family members are saying this is illegal. I’ve been pretty much ready to tell her she can either pay half of my bill this month or I’m skipping this week’s rent, but I haven’t had the chance to talk her since she’s on vacation.

I am not under a signed lease, but fact of the matter is she shouldn’t be able to just use my stuff whenever she pleases. I pay her a fair monthly rent just like every other tenant and she doesn’t get special priviledges just because she’s related to my roommate.

Thoughts? Comments? Is this illegal? What should I truly do?
