Landlord: won’t return deposit/rent after unfair treatment during room rental

By kprage

Hi, I rented a room in NJ.  When I visit the place, the landlord or the owner of the house told me of Do’s and Don’ts and agreed upon with the policy he provided.  After staying 2-3 days, I found out I wasn’t allowed to use bathroom at night (shower, cleaning, etc) after 10 PM and complained that I cannot even enter kitchen for glass of water.  Everything he told me before, he didn’t take resposible for his words for.  I decided to leave and told him to give my deposit and rest of the rent possible, but he refused to give me back any of the payment.  Also he furiously refused to answer any of the questions or the settlement.  What can I do?? Do I call the police for unfair rental treatment? Should I report to the township?  I don’t even know the room rental is legal.  How do I find out he is registered within the township?  I got contact with him with Ad online from room rental website.

Please let me know the procedure to fight back or at least get my deposit back.
