Landlords Had Issues.

By Lonnie

Okay so me and my husband rented these apartments from our ex-landlords and at first it seemed like they were really nice people would make sure everything was fixed and all of that, but after about three months I started to notice that maybe we should have waited to see if we could have gotten the house we were looking at.

It started one night when I had to call the fire department because I could smell gas real strong in my house, now to let you know something, our apartment was nothing but electrical so smelling gas alarmed me, even more considering I was 7 months pregnant at the time, so I call the police department and asked them what I should do, and the dispatcher told me she will send an officer out, to check it out for me, and when he should up it was so strong in the house that he asked me to step outside so that I would not get sick. We lived next door to a gas station so after he called the fire department himself, he then called the manager of the convienent store across the street to let them know he will have the fire department check their gas lines, after all of that, it turned out that the landlord had forgot to install a bar of some kind to keep the gas from the sewers from coming into the apartment.

The officer told me to make sure I let the landlord know first thing that morning that he needed to install that bar, well when I told the landlord, I basically got told that I should have called him first instead of the police, because they did not need to come out there for and I quote his words, "a petty thing", I was like okay I will remember to call ya, once I get out of my burning apartment next time, but trust it does not stop there.

After my son was born the ceiling fan in our living room was making a strange sound and smoke was coming from the socket on the wall, so I immediately turned it off and once again called the police department this time the fire department showed up and checked the wall, she told me that the wall felt a little warm and asked me to keep the fan off and if it starts to smoke again, get out the apartment, call us then call the landlord, and let the neighbors next door to me and below me know they might want to evacuate their apartment until we got there.

Once again when I told the landlord he threw a fit, and just to let you know, I did not call him, because the last thing on my mind was call my landlord to let him know my apartment might be getting ready to blow up.

He told me that I needed to call him because, get this, okay, the firefighters are not electricians so they will not know what to look for, and I’m like probably not, but they will know how to put out a fire if that became the case, so I prefered to call someone that I knew, would save me and my son if I needed it.

Well after that he swore he would fix the ceiling fan, but 6 months passed and the fan was never fix until, my a/c went out, and I was so upset because at the time my son was 7 months and had just gottend over a cold, and it was the hottest day of July, I called him at 2:15pm he told me to turn it off (as if I didnt do that already), and he will be by first thing in the morning…..you mean to tell me I have to keep my 7 month old in this hot apartment until he gets out of his cool house in the morning to come and fix my a/c, seriously. I had to keep my son as cool as possible by putting him in a cook tub, rubbing him with a wet towel and keeping him in a room (that was the coolest), with the windows wide open and screen on the windows so anything bug could have come in there and bit him, then what?

Well I don’t know if it’s because I’m not a landlord of what but if I tell someone that I will be there first thing in the morning and knowing they have a 7 month old child sleeping in the heat I would be there before the rooster crowed, this man did not show up until about noon and to make matters worse he just put so frion in it and called it a day he didnt come and see if it was getting cooler or nothing, and then two days later he came and "fixed" the fan, I saw "fix" because not even a day later it went out again, but this time it just stopped working altogether, the light switch didn’t even work that was connected to the fan.

I told him about it, but from that day til the day we moved 4 months later it stayed off, and as for the a/c yea it broke down again, but this time my son was 11 months old and we got wise and bought fans, they didn’t really do a lot but at least they were something, and once again I had to wait until tomorrow for him to show up, after that was when I decided it was time to start looking for something else, and the worse is yet to come.

After we told them we were moving they started acting real hateful to us, they didn’t say hi, or bye, they would show up at our apartment for any and everything, and none of it included fixing anything. And then the moving day his wife showed up and stared at us for about a hour, what did she want?

After cleaning the apartment and leaving the key we thought that would be the end of that, but it wasn’t he later told my husband that because of the two holes in our apartment that we would not be getting our deposit back, the deposit was $300, and one of the holes was starting before we moved in, it was in our kitchen and a little piece of the linuleom (cant spell that word), was torn a little he told us don’t worry about it when we were looking at the apartment, we had a rolling chair there because that is where we set up our computer desk and computer. After for about three months of the chair chipping at the floor and me telling him just about every other day about it, he decided to tell us he would come and fix it soon, but then later told us to just put a carpet over it, which we had already did anyways, becuase personally I do not feel comfortable standing on a floor with a hole in it, becuase as much I wanted to meet my neighbors I didn’t want it to be by me "dropping" in on them.

We took full responsiblity for the one in the wall because my wonderful husband wanted to act like super man and show off his smeck( my silly word for non-pecks) and elbowed a hole in our wall, I guess he really didnt know his own strength (hahahaha), I’m happy we moved out, and I actually feel a little sorry for the people that live there or have moved in, because they have no idea what they just got stuck into.
