Showing Apartment While Occupied

By Joe

I have been living at this apartment for about 4 months. When I signed the lease it was with a management company and they informed me that the owner may be showing the house to prospective buyers. During the first 4 months this meant a total of around 4 showings spaced through out the 4 months.

This week the landlord has sent a total of 6 emails informing me that my apartment will be shown 5 out of 6 days from wed to monday. There are multiple showings on multiple days including from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm on friday and saturday. I emailed the landlord to ask if these were open houses or if she could give me more specific times. I also asked her if these showings were going to continue as I sleep during the day and these showings have meant much less sleep for me these past three days. She told me they are going to show the house as much as thy want until it is sold and gave me some vague times the house will be shown fri and sat.

Is this reasonable? I cannot go on losing hours of sleep every day and having people at my apartment all day on saturday. I feel like I am a guest at this apartment and am losing my privacy. I understand they need to show the apartment but 5 out of 6 days and counting seems excessive.

Also, the last couple days I was here and people showed up they were not with an agent. Is it ok that they are just giving people access to my apartment?

Your landlord must give you at least a 24-hour notice before the open house. In this case, he emailed you so that would be the notice. If I were in your situation, I would politely ask the landlord if it’s possible to schedule showings like 2 or 3 times a week and on specific times. So instead of individual tours, it will become group tours. Explain to your landlord how you feel; for sure, you can strike a deal. Good luck!
