Squirrels and Landlords.

By Kayla S.

Hi,
I’ve been living at this old apartment turned house for nearly 3 years. In that time span we’ve had ants, mice, a greese fire due to faulty equiptment, and now a squirrel problem. What I’m curious to know is the removal of said pests: Mice and Squirrels.. is that up to the Renters to take care of or the Landlord? I’ve also taken the nessisary percautions like eating away from my room, making sure to not place wires near open spaces, aleart our landlord of any crevices small openings or other places they could be coming in from. But now I keep hearing squirelles and/or mice scampering through our walls. Unfortunatly my bed is right underneath the attics small crawl space and I’m worried that something might come out of the attic. I have to wonder who is responsible for taking care of these things. I know exterminators are expensive but I’ve done everything I can think of to remedy the situation. And nothing is being taken care of!

It depends on the root of the problem. If the mice and/or squirrels got in because of disrepair then it is the landlord’s responsibility to get them out. But if the mice and/or squirrels were attracted by waste food or a messy home then it is your responsibility to get rid of them. So why are mice and squirrels in your home? Try to get the answer to that question and you will know whose responsibility they are. Now if it the LL’s responsibility and nothing has been done to put an end to the problem, you can file a complaint to get him to act. The RPA should help you out.
