Found out apartment being rented illegal

Found out that the apartment I am renting is illegal.  Also found out that the person who I thought was my landlord does not own the house and was not authorized to sublease anything , let alone an illegal apartment.  They are holding a month’s  security . 

 I spoke to the true owners who were furious and they advised me to get my rent back that has been paid and move.  Legally how do I get my money back as well as my security.

 Need advise in NY

The best and logical step you could do is to file a complaint against your landlord for your paid rent and security deposit. You can either file your complaint through small claims court or through the RPA. Filing a complaint with the RPA is cheaper though than filing a complaint through small claims court.
