Charges after renting…

By Lauren

What is most frustrating about this whole situation is that the apartment was WAY cleaner when we moved out then when we moved in.  When we moved in I had to clean everything… wipe out all the kitchen cabinets, clean the floors (there were actually "stains" on the faux tile floors that I was able to scrub off- I mean it was obvious that they didn’t do a great job cleaning before we moved in), DUST (a lot), fill-in nail wholes, clean the patio furniture, so on so forth.  We did the same thing when we moved out (and I am constantly considered obsessive to a fault about keeping things clean…if that gives you any idea of how this place was kept).

In any case, of course we got charged for clean-up  They are known to be like this.  Where the legal advice comes in is that my brother and I both had individual leases in the EXACT same apartment, but got charged differently…based on the COMMON AREAS.  It says 1/4 living room/ kitchen clean-up charge (there were four of us with individual leases), but his charge is a different amount- which makes no sense.  On top of that, it says 1/4 patio clean-up charge on only one of ours- which, once again, makes no sense.  Because it is student living, seperate leases type-thing, I don’t think the complex is used to siblings living together, and therefore seeing each others’ charges.  If anything the differing amounts in the SAME apartment unit should prove that the charges are arbitrary at best and fraudulent at worst…

What should we do?
