House burned down

I was renting a mobile home that was lost in a fire about two weeks ago. The exact cause of the fire was never investigated however it did come from a faulty oven that I had notified the landlord of on multiple occasions through the course of my tenancy(about 10 months) which he never fixed. While the thought of suing the landlord is on my mind I would be thrilled if he would just return the deposit of 425 as at the very least I do not feel the fire was my fault. Can I get the deposit back without an attorney? or is that simply the route I will have to take?
