can my landlord bad mouth me to other landlords

By brian sample

I lived at white rock village in el dorado hills, ca. The apartments are owned by mercy housing but I would like to tell everyone that there is no mercy when it comes to dealing with the property manager. I lived there for almost a year with my wife and my five daughters who are 8yrs, 5yrs, 3yrs, 2 and 1 years of age. We decided to move out after getting numerous notices which were false, one of the notices said there was heavy foot traffic and police being called to my apt, had the management checked the info given to them they would have seen no police were ever called to my apt and very few friends came by as I worked full time and my wife works full time night shift. Anyways after false info and new rules for all tenants we decided to move to a more family like complex. I gave my 30 days notice to the manager and told her I would clean up as best i could and fix  whatever had to be fixed. She came by to do an inspection 3/5 days after i gave my notice and she was going to walk thru and let me know what i could fix or touch up to make sure I wouldnt owe any money. the carpets were being replaced so all we had to do was clean up and fix any nicks in the walls which i would also paint over if needed. everything went well during the walk thru. I moved out 3 days b4 i was supposed to but didnt hand in the keys as my friend and I were going to clean the apt and touch up etc. 2 days after i moved out I went to white rock at 7am with my friend and my old apt had been broken into and was spray painted and some vandalism, I called the police and made a report and waited for management to show up. The manager as usual was very rude and would not listen to a word and in front of people working in the office and some residents told me that she thought i was the one who did the stuff to the apt, when i told her she was wrong she repeated it and said i probably did it for pay back. I was very upset and raised my voice as she has no right saying this to me when its false as I have never given her any reason to think of me as a hoodlum. Infact my mom has lived at the apts for yrs with my sister and 4 brothers and still lives there.5 times she told me she thought i did it

Anyways we were glad to move out of there and now we are looking for a bigger place for my kids and we filled out some applications, yesterday I got a call from the landlord who wanted to rent us a 4 bdrm home and he told me that he couldnt rent to us because the manger at white rock village told him that yes we paid our rent etc but when we moved  there was destruction to the apt. I told him what had happened and I have a copy of the police report if needed but it was too late. Does she have the right to bad mouth me especially when its false, please let me know as I am so upset at this woman and she continues to falsely accuse me of this

Brian:

You will soon discover that city, state and federal agencies are worthless. After 10 months of spinning my wheels, an attorney finally directed me to, badreferences.com. They mostly handle employment law issues, but they also bust landlords who slander you. Attorneys need solid evidence and you need a clean reference–win, win.

I live in a mercy housing rental and the story of slander, bad references and false accusations rings true for me. They hire demoralizing and abusive people to manage the property or this is how they train them. There is no mercy, and some of the management sometimes has criminal ties. Brian Sample I believe your story. I have experience some of the abuse you describe in different ways where I live or saw others abused. The disheartening thing is that no one seems to be able to have an large enough impact to change how mercy housing treats its tenants. Its fought individually with each tenant and mostly legal aid lawyers. Legal aid lawyers can not be tough enough it seems to bring about the systemic change that is needed. I have heard of elderly and disabled people being treated with disrespect and it just sickens me. Thanks for letting me get some of this out in this response to your notice here.

I currently live in this property and agree with the poor treatment of tenants. Because we are struggling financially and needed a more affordable housing option we are treated like we must be criminals, lazy or ignorant and need to be babysat. I am a college educated, business owner who just happens to be a single mom with zero support and the economy has greatly affected us. We chose this option so my children’s lives would not be disrupted as they are very active in church and school. I have always lived by very high standards, so this transition was not easy. But what made it worse, we moved into a flea infested apartment leaving my young children with bites all over their legs, fridge that didn’t work and we ended up throwing out all our food. Although these items were fixed (sorta, the fridge replaced now leaks black fluid from the bottom); they made me feel like it was somehow my fault, even attempting to blame my inability to stack my food in the freezer correctly. They are very intrusive to our daily living with their constant inspections and notices. I too have received false violations which I immediately responded to with documented proof. My children and I keep to ourselves and do not participate in their programs, we pay our rent on time and follow their long ridiculous list of rules, but I cannot wait to move out and actually have the freedom to live without feeling like I’ve given up my rights to some stupid government program.
