Land lord slow repairs

By jeff

I moved into a house 1/13 in Davenport Fl form out of state. The day I moved in I did walk around inspection. I made a list of things wrong with the house. It took months for everything to be fixed. Just last month my fuse panel had to be rewired as we had power surges that caused a laptop to fry, fridge fuse to blow, and trip circuits all the time. It took 3 months to get the dishwaher fixed…Its just one thing after the other. I file repair request online and get no contact for weeks. Now I have to turn my stove off at the fuse box. I feel like the house is unsafe to live in. My power bill was over 320.00 until the fuse paniel was fixed then it dropped to $120.00 but know we are experiecing more electrical issues. Is there a way out of this lease for safety reason?

Hi Jeff! I understand what you are feeling right now. Electrical issues such as yours can lead to fire if not fixed properly as soon as possible. If the rental unit is uninhabitable then you can break your lease early. All you have to do is to serve your landlord with a 30-days or 60-days written notice to vacate the rental unit depending on what your state law requires and send it via certified mail or you can personally deliver the notice yourself. Include in your written notice the reason why you want to vacate the rental unit and some instructions on how your landlord can return your security deposit.
