landlord claiming we owe already paid rent

Our landlords are claiming we didn’t pay rent And are now trying to evict us. We’ve lived here for a year and a half without any problem. We’ve always paid rent in cash.. Handing them the money personally and having them count it in front of us. We have asked for receipts a few times But we trusted them then so we didn’t push the issue. Now they’re claiming we owe already paid rent. I realize now That we should have demanded receipts or not paid but hindsight is 20/20… I’ve only verbally asked them for receipts not sent any certified letters.. How do I defend myself in court? Help..
