Mold

By Jeanne

I have been living in a rental house for about 11 months and we left in January breaking our lease when we found out there was mold throughout the house. It was all over our furiture and had to be professionally cleaned for about $1000.00. Also we have to wash everything we own which costed another $150.00. We had a few other expenses and not to mention the time it took to clean everything we owned. When we found the "mold" (but we did not know that is what is was at the time) all over our furniture back in november we cleaned it and went on our way. But when it came back in January we knew we have a bigger problem. There is an explanation to that as well. When we first moved in there was some kind of leak or something and there was black all along the wall. We asked for it to be check out to make sure it was not mold and they supposidly did and came back with it was fixed and it was justr mildew, nothing to worry about. So when we saw the growth on our furniture we assumed it was the same and nothing to worry about. We were in the process of buying a house which was set to close mid february so we have time to move out and clean the old rental without breaking our lease. But in January we had the rental company send someone out and check the problem and he determined it was mold. We said we were moving out early. We since had two inspections one done by my insurance becuase i was trying to have them cover the cost of cleaning and the other the cleaning company who is license and bonded to determine. They would not cover it beucase it had to do with un properly maintaining the home and not on our part. So we have been back and forth with the agency and asked that we get our deposit back and they pay for half of our cleaning costs. We were told there is no way. So we were going to go to the extent of going to court but our laywer asked us to try to look up the owner and talk to her rationally. So we did and said this is what we are asking for and we don’t want to have to go to court and we would like to handle this civally. She replied with the fact that she was a lawyer and to bring it on! She has all of her ducks in a row and to never call her again with this. Naturally we were suprised and insulted but we did not retaliate with snide comments. I need advice.
