Problem with bedbugs. Who pays?

By Brittian

I have a bedbug problem in my apartment that I rent. Ive been here since Sept. and it is now Feb. Ive brought the problem to the attention of my landlord and they say that they are going to treat room to room seperately in treatments. They’ve also said theyre not going to pay for it but, are going to tack it onto my rent. Is that legal? Do they have to pay for it? Also treating room by room in treatments sounds stupid as the bed bugs are in every room so why treat one at a time? and shouldnt they treat the building im in? Cant these things move unit to unit?.

What does your lease agreement say? What about your state tenant laws? Usually, landlords pay for the bedbug treatment. They may split the cost in half (for you and your landlord) but it is very rare that they will let you pay for it all. If you are charged, it could be that it was determined by a professional that you brought the bedbugs in so you will be responsible for the treatment. So did you bring the bedbugs into the apartment? You are also right in thinking that the treatment should be for all the rooms in the house because bedbugs can hide everywhere. If you’ve determined that you are legally in the right, you can file a complaint against your landlord. RPA has that option that you could use.
