shouls a tentant have a grace period after rent date is due

I have never been late on my rent with the exception of 1 time. my rent is due on the 1st and i had to pay it on the 3rd. now since I have been living there my rent has remainded the same but when my boyfriend moved in he has charge me an additional 50 dollars  a month for him . then months later he went up 40 more dollars. his reason was property taxes whent up. then he put a notice on my door a few months later and said rent is  due on the 1st and nomore grace period and everyday after the 1st is 50 bucks. are u kidding me. help me out here. my lease was up after 9 months and i have never renwied it not because I have not asked just because he has not got around to it. i have not pressed the issue eiher but a few times in the beging. what r my right and what should i do.
