I can only advise, which I neglected to do, to give a good examination of the place before signing the lease. I just moved into a duplex. They showed me the one next door saying the duplex I was going to rent was not ready for viewing yet. I walk in and it stinks. I am not happy but think a good carpet cleaning will fix this. I have had the carpet cleaned twice by carpet cleaning companies and also with a rug doctor. Areas of the carpet still stink affecting the smell of the whole place. The carpet pad and underneath are apparently the culprit. I now plan to use an odor removal product SCOE 10X and I hope it works. Next time I rent a place I’ll check the carpet for smell and stains. It’s best to assume stains in carpet are possible urine or feces especially if the management allows pets. I didn’t give any advice but you are not alone. We live and we learn.

Sorry. When I say ” I walk in and it stinks.” I mean the unit I am renting. The one they showed smells fine.
