COMPLAINT DETAILS (from renter)

Sara and I moved into Woodland Pointe apartment on May 1st. The last week of the month Sara noticed a couple bug bites on her body. Sara went to the doctor on May 31st where she was prescribed medication for bites and swollen lymph nodes. The next couple nights she received more bites on her body. On June 4th Sara went to the doctors again where she was prescribed more medication for the bites. She called the emergency maintenance hotline reporting that she had bites on her body and that it could be from insects. The next morning June 5th Sara went down to the office and spoke with Sarah where pictures were taken of her body where the bites were occurring. Sarah went into the apartment with Sara and looked around where nothing was found. That same day Dean from Plunkett’s came out and inspected the apartment and again nothing was found. The next day June 6th Dean sent out people again this time with dogs and the dogs scented bed bugs in both the bed and the couch. Sara was told that the dogs were having a hard time finding a scent but going back to the same spots. Sara went down to the office to say thank you for coming and inspecting her place. That day someone from Plunketts left a Plunkett’s contract for us to sign stating about the heat treatment that it will be 1200 plus tax with a 250 dollar cancellation fee if you cancel within 72 hours. We then contacted Sam Spaid who is a housing attorney with Homelinemn about whether we should sign the contract or not. We faxed the entire contract to him for him to review. He told us “we are not obligated to.” After this advice I sent an email to Woodland Pointe stating that we are not going to sign the contract. I was then sent an email saying that we will have to pay the 250 dollar cancellation fee as well as we are violating our lease agreement and if the bugs spread we will be forced to pay for our treatment as well as others around. We then had another pest control professional come out to our apartment on June 8th. He sent an email stating that he searched the apartment including: the bed, box spring, couch, and along edges. He said that from what he could see there were no bed bugs to be found. To date Plunkett has not found one live insect. All research that we have seen on the internet states that anyone can bring these bugs in at anytime from anywhere without knowing it.
