COMPLAINT DETAILS (from renter)

We have lived at Valley York Apartments since May of 2011. Our current lease is up in May of 2013. On November 22, 2012, we found what appeared to be 1 bedbug in the couch. We thoroughly checked the entire apartment and were only able to find one more that we proceeded to tape to an index card for proof that there are indeed bedbugs in our apartment. (This one was found in the bedroom.) The next morning, Friday 11/23/2012, we called to inform the property manager that there were bedbugs. They proceeded to tell us that it is no problem because they "just recently purchased" the company that will be coming out to do treatments and that they will be in contact with us on Monday at the latest. They explained that they will pay for the first treatment and all subsequent treatments will be charged to us. However, we have not stayed at any hotels, we have not traveled, we have not had any house guests or brought anything into the apartment second-hand. My husband works in a factory and I am a stay at home mom, so unless the bedbugs came from the local grocery store, I find it extremely difficult to believe that we are the only apartment dealing with this. I have done research and found that they can even travel through the wiring into your apartment. The management has no plans to inspect the rest of the building to take care of the issue at its source. This is problematic because of course the problem is then not very likely to go away with one treatment (it will just keep coming back.) They stand to make a lot of money from this since they are using a company that they "own." Is this not some kind of conflict of interest? Not to mention, it does not say anywhere in our lease that we would be financially responsible in such a situation. We have a hard enough time making ends meet financially. I did a search on the complex to see if anyone else had complaints. I did come across one complaint of bedbugs in 2011 from another resident http://www.apartmentratings.com/rate/OH-Parma-Heights-Valley-York-Apartments-1254965.html. We were never informed of such a potential issue, and thus we were never able to take precautions. I think we all know from doing a google search that bedbugs are extremely difficult to get rid of once they appear in an apartment complex. This is a nightmare, as we have a two-year-old and a four-year old in the home and definitely are not thrilled with being bit many times every night. The mental anguish has been unbearable.

From Date IP Address Response
Renter Nov 28, 2012 99.25.101.81 1.The exterminator arrived today. Apparently there was just some kind of miscommunication and she was informed, we were just not made aware. She plans to do a full heat treatment on December 4th and to try to inspect the other apartments in the building as well to find the source.

Renter Nov 27, 2012 99.25.101.81 1.As of 11/27/2012, we still have not heard from the apartment manager or the company that is supposed to come for the first treatment.
