To try and force us to pay for what they are responsible for (maintaining an inhabitable unit) is simply wrong.

In late February 2013 I contacted our Apartment complex manager Charles Helms and informed him that our unit was experiencing a bed bug infestation. Which, in the 3 years we have lived in this unit we have never had. During the week of March 4th 2013 Mr. Helms sent out a company who treated the unit. A couple weeks later the company returned and did a follow-up treatment. On April 27th I received a letter from Mr. Helms stating that I owed a chargeback of $595.40 for these treatments, which he states are due with my rent on May 5th 2013. There is something morally wrong here. First of all these bugs came from somewhere else in this building. As I stated before we have been here for about 3 years with no problems. Second we were not informed of any charges to us to clean up an infestation in this unit. Third, to attempt to coerce my wife and I with the implied threat of eviction as tenants is unethical at best and criminal at worst. We have had to deal with the hardship of replacing furniture and clothing, Missed work and school to make these extermination dates; and the mental stress of having these dirty bugs in our unit. This complex is constantly moving people in and out. The bugs could have come from anywhere. To try and force us to pay for what they are responsible for (maintaining an inhabitable unit) is simply wrong.
