My son and his girlfriend are Temple University students and are looking to rent an apartment in August 2018. They were scammed in by Mr. Arif Ali to rent a 2 bedroom apartment at 1625 Fontain Ave. My son and his girlfriend begged me to put a holding deposit down and I not really looking into the area as I should have for them did write a check to Mr. Arif Ali in the amount of $1400.00 on December 13,2017 to hold unit B at 1625 Fontain Ave. As in any holding deposit I thought when the lease was actually signed this holding deposit would be put on as a security deposit. However, there was nothing ever signed. About 6 weeks later Feb. 3 my son tried to reach out to Mr. Arif Ali to ask for the holding deposit back. The reason is after looking at this area of Philadelphia online we were not pleased with the location. I want my child and his girlfriend to be as safe as possible while attending Temple. My son could not get in touch with Mr Ali and actually did not even know his name so I asked for the phone number and called him myself because I am the one who wrote out the check and it is my money. At first he was nice and said he had no problem returning my money in full. He said I would have a check by the end of the week.(which should have been Feb. 9) Then it turned into Mr Ali calling me every hour - emails- texts- up until February 7th where I asked him to stop literally harassing me and I would take him to court. He wanted me to sign something to get my money back?? Why would I sign something now? I just want my money back for something we never had. It is no different then you buy a car and take it home and then decide I do not want this. You take it back to the dealership you get your money back. Except, you actually put mileage on the vehicle. In this instance we did not get anything!! Mr. Ali will argue that he could have rented this place 100x. I still think he can and will rent (maybe he already did) this place by August and if he were a honest businessman he would return my money so my son and his girlfriend can find a much better suited place to live in the city. We cannot afford to be paying people like Mr. Ali $1400.00 for nothing at all. All this was - was 2 innocent college students looking for a place on there own and they made a mistake and I made a mistake not looking with them - I should not owe $1400.00 for a mistake for nothing.
