COMPLAINT DETAILS (from renter)

I began noticing insect bites on my body over a month ago. I did some research and discovered that my bites appeared to be bed bug bites. Approximately 3 weeks ago, I contacted the apartment complex to have them address the issue. I waited several days for the exterminator to come, sleeping in the living room in the meantime. The exterminator came when I was out of the apartment. He left a note saying that he'd treated all the rooms except for the kitchen; I had asked him to treat all of the rooms. I followed the instructions given after the extermination to vacuum and wash all garments and bedding. However, upon sleeping in the bedroom, I awoke to bites. The next night, I slept in the living room as I had done before. I awoke to more bites. Not only had the extermination not worked, it appeared to have made it worse. I again talked with the apartment complex and, again, had to wait several days for the exterminator to come treat the apartment (a week after the last treatment). I stayed with my parents, an hour away, during this time. During the next treatment, the exterminator sprayed the borders of the apartment (this time including the kitchen, upon my request). He looked in the furniture and bed, but failed to examine other places bed bugs might hide, for example cracks, outlet covers, and light switches. Though the number of bites decreased after this treatment, I am still getting bitten. In discussing this with the apartment, they refuse to negotiage and have attempted to deny that any problem exists, alledging that I could be making it up. I am a student, and I have packed up my apartment twice now, lost sleep, money, and time due to this situation. The apartment complex has failed to eradicate the insects that are biting me and I cannot afford the inconvenience or cost of continuing to wait for Prentiss Creek to complete their obligations to provide me with a hospitable place to live, sleep and eat.

LANDLORD / TENANT RESPONSES (0)
From Date IP Address Response
Landlord Mar 18, 2011 173.161.97.29 The following is standard protocol at our community for dealing with insect problems in the apartments. Additionally, I have included the time table for treatment efforts in the unit. I am able to document this information if necessary: - Resident makes management aware of the issue, providing as much detail as possible to heighten the odds of success. - Management representative schedules treatment, or inspection, no more than seven days in advance. At our community, our contracted exterminator comes every Tuesday and will either treat, inspect, or offer further assistance to the tenant. - In the case of the tenant (complaintant) in question, our exterminator reported no bed bug activity in the tenant's apartment (6478 Woodward Ave., Apt. 203, Downers Grove, Il 60516). - The exterminator, General Pest, treated on 2/22/11, 3/1/11, and attempted to treat on 3/8/11 but the tenant had already moved out. During all inspections of the apartment, no insect activity was found.
