| COMPLAINT DETAILS (from renter) |
|
Tenant was set to move out in October and has already paid $575 as an early termination fee of the lease. Tenant found bed bugs in apartment and is in the process of moving out. Tenant had been noticing several bites/bumps on her legs/arms/hands/feet for a couple months but did not suspect bedbugs as the cause. Landlord is not having a pest control company come do treatments on the apartment until a full 7 days after the discovery of the bedbugs. Due to the unlivable conditions in the tenant's apartment, the tenant is already in the process of vacating and would like out of their lease earlier than the termination fee allowed. The landlord is unwilling to cooperate and claims the apartment is still livable even though it is invested with bed bugs. The landlord will not be treating the rest of the building claiming that treating just the infected apartment will be sufficient. This is concerning as the tenant had been living in the apartment for several months and did not come in with a bedbug issue. The tenant has also not been to any hotels or stayed at any other location during the time since occupying the apartment so the likelihood of bringing bedbugs in is slight. The landlord reported problems with bedbugs "here and there" in the past and reported only treating the invested apartment. The tenant suspects the lack of bedbug treatment is how her apartment became infested. The tenant did not pay for September rent as the conditions are unlivable and treatments have not been started on the apartment. The landlord is demanding rent to be paid up until the date of the earlier move out date established before the discovery of the bedbugs.
